How to dress up for a prom ball?
The final exams are just the first tough 'exams' in your upcoming adult life. But right before them, you have to pass another one – this time on fashion and creating the perfect look for a prom. Give up the idea of wearing a formal men's suit – its black colour is rarely universal. So, how to dress up to create a decent style, which will be appropriate for many different events, and at the same time, provide you with a handsome look?
A basic thing that determines the choice of a prom styling is the price. But, not less important is finding a proper size. Sometimes, even a perfectly fitted suit from a high street shop will look much better than the most expensive suit that has too long legs or too wide shoulders.
Traditionalists, which can't imagine a prom without a suit should think about choosing its colour. A few years later the most popular were black ones. Such a suit is perfect for the evening but it is not recommended to wear in the daylight. Therefore, you won't create an amazing look for final exams with it. The more versatile offer is surely a navy blue suit that gives you more opportunities to match it with a proper shirt. While a black suit should be matched with a white shirt, a navy blue one can be fitted with more expressive colours like sky blue, pink, green or patterned shirts i.e. checked or pin-striped.
A graphite suit might also be worth considering for a prom ball. Less popular colours like beige, blue or olive should be left for other events. A prom is an important event in life of every young man but don't try to look more elegant than it is necessary. We recommend you to wear a classic suit which will fulfil all your prom needs – a tuxedo won't. If you want to boost up your look choose a three-piece-suit, a double breasted jacket or instead of wearing a tie try on a stylish and trendy bow-tie.
If you want to choose the appropriate size, you have to pay the attention to a few important things. A suit jacket can't crease on the back and has to be perfectly fitted on the shoulders. The next thing that matters is button placing. The one single button (in case of single-buttoned jackets) or a middle one should be placed on the waist. Why? It will additionally help in shaping your silhouette. If it comes to the cut, think about a slim-fit type. It looks trendy, helps to improve body proportions and underlines the shoulders. Remember about suit jacket lapels - they cannot be too narrow. It's good to let them fit to collar points and a tie or a bow tie.
Pay attention to the arm's length. The perfect arm is about 2 cm longer than the wrist and the cuffs are 1-2 cm longer than the jacket's arm.
Another important thing are trousers. They cannot be too long because such a situation visually shortens your silhouette. Depending on the trouser leg width, the fabric should slightly lay on the shoes.
Luckily, the length of trousers or jacket's arms can be individually fitted and you should think about the tailor's alterations right after buying a suit.
Although a navy blue suit can be matched with a shirt in various colours, we recommend choosing a classic white long sleeve shirt with a kent or cutaway collar for the prom. It's better to give up on unnecessary details. A colourful button strap, pockets and decorative stitchings should be a part of a styling for other events. If you choose a bow tie instead of a tie, place a bet on a white shirt with a fold that hides a button-fastening.
Usually, a suit is the first idea for a prom styling. However, another decent option to wear is surely an odd jacket and trousers set. Yet, you need to keep the appropriate level of formality. An elegant suit jacket should be velveteen and complemented by suit trousers. If it comes to colours try on a black or a navy blue suit jacket and black or graphite trousers.
The last two important elements of a prom styling are shoes and accessories. Place a bet on classic and plain leather low shoes without buckles, snaps or strong stitchings. If you want to experiment, the accessories give you space to do it. Patterns? A tie and a handkerchief. Expressive colours? A tie or a bow-tie. Remember, in case of accessories, you must pay attention not only to the pattern or colour but also to the quality of manufacturing. The best for a prom ball are velveteen bow ties, silk ties and cotton, linen or silk handkerchiefs.
