How to dress up for a family meeting?
Christmas time and family meetings have their own sets of rules. Although they are in force within private life, you still need to learn some extra tips to make a great impression in front of your family. These rules refer to one's behaviour and the specific dress code. The second one is especially important when you have an opportunity to meet new people and want to make a positive first impression.
Christmas time is surely the time when you have to care about your style the most. The Christmas dinner is not a business meeting, but anyway, you should dress up in a suit. The most favourable colours are dark, elegant and classic ones like, i.e. navy blue or grey. If you decide to wear a suit, complement it by an elegant shirt with a tie or a bow-tie. A white long sleeve shirt is always a good choice, but you can use, without fear, other bright colours or even subtle patterns. More freedom is definitely allowed during selecting a tie or a bow-tie – they can be colourful or patterned. Feel free to experiment with fabrics. A velvet bow-tie or a silk tie works perfectly with a suit. On the other hand, a textile tie looks stunning with a jumper.
A handkerchief in a suit pocket is another decent and interesting detail that vivids a Christmas styling. The last step in completing your look is to decide on elegant shoes and a warm coat.
To make a positive impression, cut yourself a bit of slack. In the case of small family gatherings, it's worth to place a bet on comfort and blend it up with elegance and simplicity. An elegant suit jacket that limits your movements can be easily replaced by a V-neck jumper or a cardigan. A turtleneck jumper also will do. What about suit trousers? Replace them with less formal chino trousers or even easy-going black denim jeans. Remember, that such stylings shouldn't be complemented by strong expressive colours and too many details. A neat Christmas look should remain classic, toned and elegant.
During other family events, your styling should be matched not only with having in mind the season, but also the type of event. For a formal dinner in a restaurant, the best choice is a suit. But, if the meeting is casual, you are free to experiment with an odd jacket and trousers. In such an outfit a suit jacket or a blazer is matched with trousers in different colour or fabric. A match-up of a trendy blazer and chino trousers looks really great. If it comes to colours, place a bet on the classic match-up of navy blue and grey. Another decent colouristic idea is to try on beige and the shades of blue.
A long sleeve shirt, regardless if matched to a suit or an odd suit jacket and trousers, doesn't need to be white. Instead of this classic design, place a bet on colours and patterns. At almost every family gathering, a blue shirt works as good as beige, grey or patterned i.e. pin-striped or checked one. In such stylings, the details really matter. Even a toned styling may become iconic and magnificent when it has a properly matched tie and a handkerchief. The best are colourful and patterned stylings, which only refer to a shirt, a tie and a suit jacket. If you have a desire, you can sometimes resign from a tie and slightly loosen the collar.
Warmer days just invite less formal and easy-going smart casual outfits to your look. Even though, you shouldn't completely forget about the elegance. A polo shirt matched with chino trousers or jeans and moccasins hits a bull's eye.
The traditionalists, who regardless of the season, decide on a long sleeve shirt may fit it with chino trousers, then roll up the sleeves and give up on wearing a suit jacket and a tie.
